Tobacco
The Healthy Aroostook staff works in Central and Southern Aroostook County to address the tobacco challenge through prevention, education, and policy and environmental change. We partner with local schools, community organizations, worksites, child care facilities, health care providers, social service providers, and municipalities to assess tobacco related-needs and provide necessary resources. A few tobacco-related projects that we’ve been involved in are:
- Providing education to students on the harmful effects of tobacco use.
- Working with worksites to make policy changes that protect employees from secondhand smoke and also to provide resources for employees that wish to quit.
- Educating child care staff members and parents through on site training and educational packets, respectively.
- Educating community members and worksites on new laws and regulations.
- Assisting municipalities in implementing tobacco free parks and playing fields.
- Providing resources to landlords on the benefits of tobacco-free rental properties.
- Working with retailers to decrease tobacco-related advertising and underage sales.
- Recruiting medical providers to assess and assist patients who are ready to quit.
- Advocating for stronger tobacco prevention efforts and policies.
- Promoting youth involvement in advocacy, prevention, and education.
- Providing tobacco cessation to community members who would like to benefit from social support during the quitting process.
- Promoting the Maine Tobacco Helpline (800) 207-1230.
